Ficksburg borders the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho - a rich diverse area to
visit. The Lesotho people are mainly cattle farmers and still farm the traditional
way - herd boys take the cattle up into the mountains to graze .
during the day.Nighttime the cattle are brought back to
the kraals. The Sothos are very traditional and not much has changed, in the
rural areas. People still live in huts build of clay with thatch roofs. The
country is extremely popular amongst fly fisherman, bikers and off-roaders,
not to mention hikers and mountaineers.
A visit to Clarens in the Eastern Free State is worth your while - referred
to as the Art Mecca of South Africa, it boasts many art galleries exhibiting
a very broad spectrum of the arts, from the South African Masters to Young
and Upcoming Artists. On the adventure side - you will fill your days in no
time. Go fossil hunting with a geologist and experience the excitement of
discovery another dinosaur! Mountain biking is very popular as well as hiking
and mountaineering.
Fouriesburg, the little sandstone town in the Eastern Free State is yet another
charm. It has a Tourist Information Center, a hotel and many guesthouses.
In Fouriesburg you will meet practitioners of Equus Sole, a qualified environmentalist
will take you into the veldt, sharing his knowledge and love for the area
and the preservation thereof.
Qwaqwa lies at the foot of the Drakensberg - home to the Sothos. Attend a
traditional funeral and learn more about these people and their traditions.
Many are master grass weavers and thathchers and a grass-weaving factory has
just been established.
Bethlehem is the main town of the Eastern Free State with hospitals, a medical
center and many other facilities. Visitors to the rural areas do most of their
