The Lesotho Highlands Water Project was established by Treaty between the Government of Lesotho and South Africa in 1986. The purpose of this joint undertaking was to transfer water from the Highlands of Lesotho to the Vaal River catchment in South Africa, to augment water supplies mainly in the South African province of Gauteng, and to generate hydropower for Lesotho. This project was seen as one of the most ambitious water transfer schemes in the world. The Highlands Hotel in Ficksburg South Africa has a permanent exhibition of the completed project with relevant magazines and video material available. The Highlands Hotel has a Theta trained guide based at the hotel and available to accompany guests on outings to Lesotho and the Katsi Dam in particular.
